Fantastic Testimonial on the use of the DSD from Tiana Pelaia at the University of Sydney

Scientific innovation is best measured by its real-world impact. We were delighted to receive feedback from Dr Tiana Pelaia at the University of Sydney, whose team incorporated Pplus Medical’s DSD technology into their platelet research workflow.

Their testimonial offers a compelling perspective on the role of DSD in preserving platelet integrity during storage and handling, while also demonstrating its value as a practical tool for researchers seeking greater flexibility and consistency in experimental design. Experiences such as these reinforce our mission to bridge innovation and research excellence in the field of platelet science.

The DSD supported our platelet research in two important ways. First, it helped address the logistical bottleneck of relying exclusively on freshly isolated samples, particularly for technically demanding microfluidic experiments. By providing a practical early storage window, the device gave us greater flexibility to coordinate and complete shear-based mechanobiology assays. Its portability, compatibility with microvolume assays, and scalability in relation to existing clinical standards make it a promising strategy to overcome the practical limitations associated with relying on fresh samples in the laboratory. 

Second, the DSD provided a useful experimental platform for how different platelet functions respond to storage. Our study identified a divergence between preserved shear-dependent platelet adhesion and earlier deterioration in biochemical responsiveness, while also revealing distinct responses between PRP and washed platelets, and between DSD storage and cold storage. These findings allowed us to investigate platelet storage as a function-specific process rather than as a single measure of overall viability.
